Tell us what Chakrubs is in one sentence.

Chakrubs is a brand that encourages sexual and spiritual exploration and empowerment through pleasure products made from crystals.

What made you interested in starting a sexual wellness company?

The idea for Chakrubs came quite suddenly and organically; I didn’t sit at a chalkboard trying to come up with ideas for a sexual wellness company.  I am a musician and had always planned on pursuing that. When I was in my early twenties I ended an emotionally and sexually abusive relationship and as part of my healing process, I took a job at The Pleasure Chest, which is a sex-positive adult store, to learn more about sexuality. At this time I also invited a young spiritual teacher to come live with me and was learning a great deal about energy and crystals. I had the opportunity to purchase toys from the store at a discount, but none of the products really spoke to me. I knew that I didn’t just need a product to get me off – I needed to heal the emotional trauma that caused me to lose connection to myself. When I went with my spiritual friend to a woman’s house who had a large collection of crystals, it clicked. Crystals hold a lot of potential for spiritual healing, and to engage with them during self-pleasure could help develop self-love. The name “Chakrubs” popped into my head and I knew this was something I wanted for myself. In a way, it was the crystals that told me they were ready to be acknowledged for their ability to facilitate this kind of healing.

What is your most popular product?

Anything rose quartz, which we have a few different products made from that material. I think rose quartz is so popular because it connects with the heart and helps soothe heartache, which we all have experienced. It’s also so comforting and embodies the beauty of self-love.

What is the most common sex question you get asked?

I’m more interested in teaching about how energy affects your ability to comfortably explore sexuality rather than giving tangible sex tips. I think it’s good for everyone to study and learn about sexuality and become aware of the pleasure our bodies are truly capable of. But I think when it comes to sex it’s good to approach it like a jazz musician. See, a jazz musician learns the “ins and outs” of a piece of music, the possibilities for different chords voicings, and so on, but as opposed to playing a classical composition strictly by the rules, they allow themselves to forget the rules and just play. This allows for true expression and exploration. I think this can be applied to sex. We can know what’s possible but live in the moment to allow true expression and passion to move us.

What advice do you have for women who want to have a more positive association with their sexuality and sex lives?

Sex isn’t just about sex. It’s about getting to know yourself, advocating for what you want. Gaining self-confidence and self-understanding can help you with your sex life and vice-versa. When I figured out more about my sexuality, every aspect of my life got better. Also, just start playing again. That, too, unlocks creativity and confidence in other parts of your life.

What are your thoughts on the Goop jade egg controversy and what advice would you give you yoni egg lovers?

I think Goop was hopping on a trend and didn’t properly inform their customers. There is a lot of conflicting information about yoni eggs, and we have extensive blogs written on our website about this topic. My advice is to use common sense, listen to your body, and don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor about anything new you’re introducing to your body. Me and the team at Chakrubs love yoni eggs and have worked with them for years without any concerning health issues, but every body is different. As long as you use the egg with proper care and common sense, it is a safe and beautiful practice.

What would you say is the biggest problem in sexual health in the US?

Lack of education. I am someone who believes sex education should be introduced in school early on, including information about consent and pleasure.

What do you love about The Bloomi?

I love the care and attention The Bloomi puts into the products they offer, and their dedication to creating community of sexually empowered people.

What advice do you have for women who want to have a more positive association with their sexuality and sex lives?

Dive in completely. Creating a more positive association with sexuality takes dedication and focus towards multiple areas of our lives. I think approaching it from many angles is the best way to go. Read books, join online communities, attend workshops, but remember that it’s not just about sex. It goes deeper than that. To create a positive association with sex one must also look into how our deep-seated beliefs were formed, what we were conditioned to think, what shame was passed onto us from our parents and so forth. This is an all-encompassing process of self-awareness. Chakrubs assists with this because they encourage us to pay attention to our energy and look at masturbation as a spiritual practice.

What do you like to do for fun when you are not working?

I give myself incredible pleasure with my Chakrubs and write about the spiritual downloads I receive.
